Calling all animal charity supporters!

15 Aug

Thank you to all of you who have completed my animal charity dissertation survey so far. I greatly appreciate your help! I still need a few more responses though so if anyone else currently supports an animal charity (either by donating or volunteering) please could you take just a few minutes to fill it in? You’ll be doing me a huge favour!

I’m super busy at the moment but I promise I’ll be back with lots more exciting animal posts in the very near future!

Thanks again!

Horse meat found in beef burgers

16 Jan

As I read news stories this morning reporting that horse meat has been found in Tesco’s beef burgers, I can safely say I’ve never been happier to be a vegetarian. Allegedly, tested samples of the beef burgers contained equine DNA, with one sample made up of 29% horse meat in relation to the beef content.

It just goes to show you never know what you’re eating unless you make it yourself! I’m sure most of you will agree that the thought of eating horse is extremely unappealing. But then again, how many people eat beef or pork without so much as a second thought. After all, they are all animals that deserve to be treated with respect. Either way, I think Tesco has got a bit of work to do to gain it’s customers’ trust back!

Save the badgers?

18 Sep

It has been announced that the government is set to give permission for a full-scale badger cull here in the UK. The cull could destroy almost one third of the UK badger population in order to control the spread of bovine tuberculosis to cattle. The first badger cull licence has just been issued, allowing the shooting to begin almost immediately.

Although the cull has fierce support from the farming community and the environment secretary, Owen Paterson, it also faces strong opposition. Many people doubt whether it is justifiable to kill up to 100,000 of these beautiful creatures when it is still unclear if it will successfully prevent the spread of bovine TB. The Badger Trust and animal rights campaigners across the country plan to do all they can to stop the plans going ahead, but will it be enough?

Strong arguments have been made both for and against this badger cull but what do you think?
